Comment and I'll add you pretty much no matter what.  Oh, and please friend me back because I'm a little bit nuts and I hate when my friends number isn't the same as my mutual friends number.

(P.S. Many thanks to [info]thisismarc for Photoshop help.)

Subject:Most exciting album discovery of my life!
Time:11:09 am.
OH MY GOD.

I'm not sure why I didn't kno about this sooner, but there is a WONDERFUL album with covers of the entire score from The Nightmare Before Chritmas.  I am totally and completely obsessed with that movie, like almost as much as the kids at Hot Topic.  I was really skeptical because I love the orig score so much, but some of these are really great (and some of them are kinda meh, but that's what the delete key is for!).

It has covers by: Devotchka, Sparklehorse, The Album Leaf, Vitamin String Quartet, RJD2 and a bunch of others.  Seriously, some of these are so good.  The instrumental tracks are just breathtaking and creepy in the same ay that the film is.

GO BUY THE MP3s ON AMAZON FOR FIVE DOLLARS.  DO IT.

Tourist: Excuse me, can you tell me how to get to MoMA from here?
Suit: Fuck you, what do I look...
Tourist, indignantly interrupting: No, fuck you, you motherfucking piece of shit. You don't want to answer, you say "I don't know". All you New Yorkers are a bunch of cock-sucking assholes.
[Suit, stunned, gives directions.]
Bystander to tourist
: Where did you learn to do that?

Tourist: The Midwest.

Subject:the two BEST states, thankyouverymuch
Time:11:02 am.
This morning I had my first lecture with Professor/Former Vice President of the United States Walter F. Mondale.  He co-teaches the ENORMOUS class (which filled up in about three days) with a Political Science prof.  When the latter introduced the class, I was immediately annoyed that our discussion of Constitutional Law began with Mondale's biography and about fifteen minutes of praise.  Yes, Mondale was a great politician and is still an amazing advocate, speaker, and so on.  No, it's not a class about a local hero.  I started to worry that the whole semester would consist of this man sucking WFM's proverbial dick.

After the intro, though, WFM took the podium.  He's a Golden Boy in Minnesota, a self-deprecating pillar of eternal reassurance.  He didn't speak about his wisdom and experience, but from it. All of the work he's done whistles through his words and lends sincerity and credibility to pretty much everything he says.  I'm taking three classes on Constitutional Law (yesssss, Federalist Papers) this semester and now I'm officially fired up, in a way that can usually only be done by Europe's "The Final Countdown."

I think I'm gonna start making everything in here friends-only.  I'm not gonna start smacktalking or writing erotica, but I'd just like to be able to name-drop in posts without worrying about Old Man Joe Internet in a Bathrobe stalking my acquaintences, which is pretty likely because most of the people I know are downright charming.  If you wanna be able to read stuff in the future- come on, I know you can't resist music recs and youtube videos- just leave a comment and it shall be done.

Livejournal being down was the scariest thing that's ever happened to me.

But my dad and I went to go see Sheryl Crow and Jerry Seinfeld for his company's150th birthday, which was pretty cool.

If there are any girls in the Milwaukee area who actually read this thing: where do you get your hair done?  I need mine cut and I need someplace not too expensive that will actually do what I want instead of exercising artistic paternalism ll over my head.

Subject:I like what you do to me, I like what you give to me.
Time:1:34 am.
I slept for about 10 hours this afternoon/evening/night, from 3 to 1ish. I'm surprised that I slept that long without waking up at all but so relieved that I'm caught up a little bit- I hadn't slept more than four hours a night for the past week or so. I hope this makes getting up at 5 tomorrow a little bit easier.

This weekend Jason and I are going camping near Mankato. Besides being excited just to see him, I'm really looking forward to the trip- I haven't been camping in a few years when a whole bunch of us went to Devil's Lake. Please cross your fingers for me and hope that I won't be totally and completely useless in the wilderness. I seem to remember being good at this kind of thing, but I'm afraid that years of city life have softened me.

My new musical obsession is Handsome Boy Modeling School. You're all encouraged to heckle me and say "What took you so long" because I really missed the boat on this one. Half of HBMS is Nathaniel Rockwell, who would later go on to form Lovage and Music to Make Love to Your Old Lady By, a legendary album of the sexmusic persuasion. Handsome Boy is a little bit more chill and less blatant in its lustiness. A YouTube commenter said "I can't decide whether to slip into something more comfortable or slip into a coma," one of the best descriptions I've ever heard. Because it'll make this entry look longer (and I like this song), here's a video:

Maria's Greek church thing was this past weekend. I was hesitant to go after a very mild falling-out with the organization a few years ago, but was persuaded because she's leaving for Spain for a YEAR on Wednesday and it was my last chance to see her. I'm glad I ended up going because I ran into a couple ghosts of summers past whom I hadn't seen in aaaaages. Paris was there, sadly without his newest child, and my old friend Frank, who has grown a beard and graduated from Marquette. That makes me feel old, like a lot of things do lately.

Vanilla Coke is back! I remember wanting to make a long post all about that. When I was a freshman in high school, a couple friends and I invented Chanilla Coke, a cherry/vanilla hybrid that changed my life forever. I'll have to remember to pick up some of each after work tomorrow to see if it's as good as I remember.

Working full-time is an experience I'm not particularly enjoying, but at least I'm used to it. At least they give me long weekends off to visit the boyfriend, without which my summer would be royally unbearable. And it feels good to be making money, though it'll feel even better when I blow it all to go to Cedar Point (17 rollercoasters!) at the end of August.

Time:7:35 pm.
Yesterday at work I ran into Mr. Leon, my orchestra teacher from middle school.  It was amazing to see him again.  You know that old TV show where they surprise you by bringing on all of your ghosts of Christmases past?  It was kind of like that.  I told him that I had a gig after work and he was delighted.  He called me a "fabulous" violinist even though he hasn't heard me play in about three years.  I met his girlfriend, who was so sweet- she has a daughter in Minnesota, so they'll be coming up to visit during the semester and we might get together.

Mr. Leon is one of those really good teachers they make movies about.  He always had faith in me even when I played a little bit out of tune or a solo-ensemble judge didn't like how I played something.  He fought for me all through middle school.  I really hope that everyone has someone like him at one point in their lives.

New ringtone: Interpol's "Slow Hands" or Peter, Bjorn and John's "Young Folks"?

My cousin Nicholas committed suicide earlier today, I'm told.  He was 25 and just out of art school.  No one knows how or why yet, but those things don't matter.

It's been a sad couple of years for my family.  In 2006 my grandmother lost two sons- this time it skipped a generation.

Subject:Bits of News
Time:11:28 pm.
-I have really cute new shoes.
-Summerfest starts Thursday night.  I want to go see Wolfmother but I'm not sure if I have anyone to go with yet.  My friend Drew is going to be in town but he wants to see Blue Oyster Cult.  Seriously? Seriously.
-I have the new Interpol but I don't want to listen to it because I'm in an "I hate everything" music stage.  I'm hoping I come out of it soon because I've been really, really excited about this album.  If he's reading this, a billion thanks to Jason, the biggest sweetheart in the world, for the album.  And for being so cute. :-*
-My big brother Patrick showed up from Chicago yesterday.  He and my younger brother Tumbis are at a scary movie right now.  A couple of hours ago we were talking to some of Tumbis' friends and looking at his yearbook and Paqui and I decided that high school kids are way cooler now than they were when we were in school.  We want to go back to high school and be friends with all of the arty kids with hardcore swoops and dozens of pairs of black Chucks.
=Patrick also brought with him the upcoming Tegan & Sara album.  I only heard one track but it's pretty f*ing good.  They're growing up before my very eyes.
-I read last night that the Spice Girls might be reuniting in the near future.  They were the loves of my life back in fourth grade, and I really really hope this happens.  It would be even better if they went on tour singing all of their classics from the epic two albums they made when I was younger.  Zig-a-zag ah!
-Even though I'm working a lot (by my standards), I seem to have a lot of extra time on my hands.  I've taken up knitting/crochet, which is pretty stupid because it's eighty degrees outside.  At least I can rest assured that I'll be warm when cold weather does strike (which, in Minnesota, will probably be September).  I'm making a huge rug for my apartment next year out of old jeans and sweatshirts, and it looks pretty rad so far.

I'm sure there are other fascinating minutae that  I left out, but you get the jist.   Nothing's changed since elementary school- summer is fun until the novelty wears off and you realize your brain is rotting from Guitar Hero and Diet Mountain Dew.

In case you're like me and don't usually watch TV, you probably don't know that the CW is starting a GossipGirl series in fall.  GossipGirl is the best, worst, juiciest, most ridiculous chick lit series about New York high society in the history of the world.  Oh my god.  So excited.

Mrs. Woosencraft,

I checked out the dates for this summer, and I'm free on the dates of the seminar- I'd absolutely love to attend.  Thank you so much for contacting me!

-Lauren

From February 24, 2004! It's really bizarre that this is only coming back to me now, more than three years later.

For the record: Somehow despite this wire-crossing, I did, indeed, go to the World Affairs Seminar that year and it was pretty awesome.
